Argument Essay

Food Labeling

Have you ever thought the labels on food have more information then it should and be more simplified. If you have here’s some ways why it should be changed. Half the population picks up there food cans and boxes and throws it in there shopping cart and never read the food labels. I think if more food labels just had the important facts and be more appealing on the food people would read them more often and not be as confused.

Food labeling is a poor way to get people to eat healthy and go by the labels. Not a lot of people pay attention to food labels there for read them. The reason people might not read the food labels could be because they don’t understand the information on the labels. Most people don’t care enough to read the labels and don’t care about the risks of eating the foods and have warning labels it’s too much of a fuss for them. I think if people would read the food labels they still wouldn’t change their eating habits. This reason is probably because they don’t understand the information. For example What are
carbohydrates and are they good or bad for you. I’m not even sure if people found out what that meant and would be cautious about carbohydrates when eating certain foods.

Rumor has it that consumer advocacy group center for science in the public interest wants to give the food facts label a makeover. The center says the makeover is a must to clarify and to standout important parts of the label and also to prevent misleading words from confusing customers. Some of the changes they want to fix and I agree are to put calorie and serving size information in larger type at the top of the label. That way it’s the first thing consumers read and know how much they are eating right away. Another change they want to make is to use red labeling and the 20 percent of the daily recommended for fats, sugars, sodium or cholesterol. Those are some changes that could probably help consumers read food labels and understand them better.

I believe food labels are not all convincing and truthful that they come out to be. A food labeled "all natural" can contain pesticides, herbicides, heavy metal toxins, hidden MSG, synthetic chemical vitamins, and a host of other non-natural substances. A lot of consumers don’t know that Natural doesn’t mean organic. As research shows there is no official definition for "natural food", food producers and manufacturers have the liberty to call anything natural. Consumers should also beware of “Natural Coloring”. Artificial colors like red, blue and yellow come from coal tar which is a petrochemical product. They can cause allergic reactions such as migraines, itching, rashes and anxiety. This product can be found in shampoos, ice-cream, sweets, soaps and cosmetics. Labels can be misleading as you might see, just because food labels tells us this food products have all natural ingredients its not always true. I’m sure the amount of calories, fat and high fructose syrup they put on labels are not always exact either. All Manufactures want to do is sell there product so they don’t always put the truth on there labels and that’s why I think they make there food labels so confusing.

Food labeling can be misleading and confusing as you can see. Manufactures should put a stop to this and simplify and makeover there labels for us consumers. I think it will help buyers understand what there eating and trust the manufactures on what there making for us. If more consumers find out what’s really in the food there eating and how food labels are not always exact they will stop buying their food. What’s the point on putting information labels if it’s not the truth. I hope Manufactures make a change in this and make it easy for us to understand and let us trust the labels more.

Journal Entry 7

This horrifying article is about a 17 year old girl named Stacey Irvine from Britain who only eat McDonalds chicken nuggets for 15 years of her life and refuses to eat nothing else. This diet destroyed her health when she was rushed to the hospital after collapsing and having severe difficulty breathing. News reports that the young factory worker had been eating practically nothing else besides McDonalds chicken nuggets since she was about 2 years old. Stacey has also never once eaten a fruit or vegetable, which has left her grossly deficient in practically every single vitamin and mineral in existence. This horrific diet finally caught up with her. Doctors discovered severely swelled veins on the young girls tongue and quickly diagnosed her with anemia. They put her on emergency vitamin regimen. According to the reports if she continues with this diet and doesn’t change her eating habits she will soon die. But Stacey refuses to eat nothing else but the chicken nuggets her own mother cant change her eating habits and has been trying for years but she just won’t break. McDonald's chicken Nuggets, of course, are made from a so-called food product called "mechanically separated chicken," which is created from chickens that have been "stripped down to the bone, and then 'ground up' into a chicken mash, then combined with a variety of stabilizers and preservatives, pressed into familiar shapes, breaded and deep fried, freeze dried, and then shipped to a McDonald's near you. Never would I thought chicken nuggets could cause sever pain and cause you to die. Hopefully this nightmare wakes up Stacey and she can continue finding a good diet that can prevent her from dieing and layoff her old habits.

This article is about consumers avoiding healthy foods and eating fast foods such as McDonalds and other fast food industries. About 75 Million Americans "Super size" themselves and damage their health. Forty percent of American meals are now purchased and consumed outside the home, typically consisting of high-calorie, low-nutrition items such as soft drinks, French fries, and low-grade meat, laced with fat, cheap sweeteners, pesticide residues, chemical additives, and salt. This is why 60% of Americans are either overweight or obese. Studies show every three children born since 2000 have developed diabetes in their lifetime. The junk food industry now under attack by public health advocates and parents find that its in a similar position as in fast foods. They are also concerned about the school lunches and want to provide healthier school lunches rather then sell soda pop and other snacks that are high in fat. Studies have shown that school organic gardens, salad bars, and healthy lunches improve the health and academic performance in students. So its easy to say we should put a heavy tax on junk food served at fast food restaurants and in school cafeterias. This article gave me a good prospective on what fast foods and junk foods is doing to this American society and putting people especially kids in a higher greater risk in obesity and diabetes.

Ethnography Essay Draft

There’s nothing more that I love then baking. My favorite thing to bake is cupcakes. Maybe it’s because I have the most fun making them or there’s so many different idea’s you could do for birthdays, holidays etc. I was getting bored of baking the same old cupcakes all the time. I wanted to find something I could bake that’s new, fun and creative.

When I found out this new idea on cupcake pops I was extremely excited to try it and to try different recipe ideas this blog had to offer. I googled it and stumbled on to Bakerella blog they have so many creative ideas and pictures I was on the page for hours. The page is bright and fun it has a bubbly pink background and white font letters that captures your attention. They post pictures on places they visit and house wares full of baking products that they use. On the left hand side there’s a choice of topics too pick from such as sweet stuff, pop & bites and more topics. They post recipe ideas, pictures and details how to make pops, different bakery’s, bright appliances and more. When the person who created this goes out of town she takes pictures of the places she goes and things she see’s. Recently she went to Chicago to the housewives show then last weekend some where a little bit warmer. Which was Florida where a weekend conference full of learning and sharing with friends and a bunch of food and fun thrown
in.

On the side of the page there’s weekly polls that you can vote for this week is called you
scream I scream for Ben & jerry’s 45%, haagan dazes 22%, Baskin Robbins 12%,

Brayer’s 10%, Edy’s 7%, Bruster’s 3%, Mayfield 1%. The comments consist of people interacting about if they had to choose one dessert to eat for the rest of there life some said cheese cake, chocolate chip cookies, mint chocolate chip ice cream, cheesecake bars, brownies, chocolate cupcakes with salted caramel frosting and cupcake pops. These comment give people the chance to express their opinion on what desserts they love and give them a chance to let people know that. Most of the desserts people picked was there own personal recipe’s and there family recipe’s that they would eat for the rest of there life. Easter is right around the corner she posted up pictures of Easter pops and tell the blog viewers how she’s behind on making spring sweets. There’s a demonstration on how she makes little bunny pops. The chocolate pops decorated with eyes, bunny ears, nose and whisker’s too look like a cute little Easter bunny. I think it’s a cute fun way to entertain your kids for that holiday and bake it with them.

This Blog helped me a lot on giving me more knowledge on these chocolate pops and other fun desserts I never heard of. When I first saw these adorable little cupcake pops on Bakerellas blog, I thought they were cute, but figured they were also way too complicated to make. Turns out they're pretty easy to make, just a little time consuming. I found it best to divide the recipe up into a two day process. You can save time by using a boxed cake mix and store bought cream cheese frosting. The recipe is actually rather simple. Crumble your baked cake into bits and then mix in some cream cheese frosting. Roll the cake into balls, then refrigerate until firm. When firm enough dip cake ball into desired chocolate and then I decorated with chocolate sprinkles and they were ready in a instant. Another recipe of her Ill probably try next is the black bottom cupcakes all the directions are there and the pictures of the ending product look irresistible.

I found this blog incite full and interesting. Everything about this blog caught my eye and attention. The way it is set up too the bright colors every where on the page and most of all the dessert ideas she has. All the chocolate pop creations she makes is incredible and very simple to make from experience. After writing about this maybe more people will find this blog worth reading.
